Claude Desktop's native support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) transforms how accountants and business owners review financial records. In this tutorial, we will configure Claude Desktop to talk directly to your active TallyPrime company in less than 5 minutes.

Prerequisites

Before starting, ensure you have:

  1. Windows 10 or 11 with TallyPrime running.
  2. Tally ODBC/XML server enabled on port 9000 (press F1 ▸ Settings ▸ Connectivity ▸ Client/Server configuration).
  3. Claude Desktop installed.
  4. TallyMCP Windows Installer installed.

Step 1: Verify Tally Connectivity

Open PowerShell and run the built-in diagnostic doctor:

tally-mcp doctor

You should see a green checkmark confirming:

  • HTTP port 9000 is open.
  • Tally responded with a valid ENVELOPE XML payload.
  • An active company is currently loaded.

Step 2: Configure Claude Desktop

In Claude Desktop, navigate to: File ▸ Settings ▸ Developer ▸ Edit Config

Or open %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json in your favorite text editor. Add the tally server definition inside the mcpServers object:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "tally": {
      "command": "C:\\Users\\<YOUR_WINDOWS_USERNAME>\\AppData\\Local\\Programs\\TallyMCP\\tally-mcp.exe",
      "args": ["serve"]
    }
  }
}

Tip: Replace <YOUR_WINDOWS_USERNAME> with your Windows login username. If tally-mcp is in your system PATH, you can simply use "command": "tally-mcp".

Save the file and restart Claude Desktop completely (quit from system tray and re-launch).

Step 3: Start Conversing with Your Books

Look for the small hammer (tools) icon in Claude Desktop's chat box. You should see 12 available tools, including:

  • get_active_company
  • list_ledgers
  • get_ledger_balance
  • get_daybook
  • get_trial_balance
  • get_outstandings

Now ask Claude:

"Show me all cash and bank balances as of today, and list any outstanding payments due to Sundry Creditors over 30 days old."

Claude will automatically call get_ledger_balance for Bank and Cash groups, followed by get_outstandings, presenting a formatted table with exact figures.
